The World Happiness Report ranks people's happiness level based on their GDP, social support, etc. Happiness is a pretty abstract concept, hence the graph wanted to show the details that come into the calculation to make understand how these countries are ranked. Making the graph into a 3D plane helps the user divide the information that they want to consume at each point, but also allows for further explorations.
