Designers & Tools
2022 -
“We become what we behold. First we shape the tool then the tool shape us.”
Marshall McLuhan
As technology has now intertwined itself in our lives, changing the way we connect with one another, the way we work and play and many more, this felt like an appropriate time to trace back on how our relationship is with our digital tools
designer/designed. user/used.
Tracing the details of the relationship between you, the designer/user and your orbit of design tools, (mostly) digital products that help you complete your works as a designer. We will investigate your connections, looking beyond the veneer of delightful seamlessness towards the invariably awkward actual interfacing of humans and machines where agency is still under contest.
RESEARCH
Through talking with working designers and also student designer.

Some of the main points that we discussed are
The designer and their activity
Designers agency over their tools
Designers acknowledgement of tools in their practice
The result of the discussion is made into a booklet.

My thoughts on the research
As technology has now intertwined itself in our lives, changing the way we connect with one another, the way we work and play and many more, this felt like an appropriate time to trace back on how our relationship is with our digital tools
Retracing my experiences
I opened up past documents / digital whiteboards that I used for group works, ect
Some questions about the tools start to emerge;
What if like the information isn’t presented in that manner?
Why are there so many options? Is it necessary?
Do you want to add a note or a comment? Is this text or a photo? What color should the note be? Do you want the font to look like handwriting? Should it be square or circle?

In a search for a better tool, I came across Kinopio (collaboration tool)
One of the things that stood out was the statement from its founder
“Software designed to replicate a physical experience will always suck because it replaces the tactility of the real world with conceptual baggage that doesn’t fit the medium.”
“ Software is a conversation between you and a computer. Conversations are better when they’re chill.“
